Set of works that allude to a possible America, that which today would have been if the encounter of cultures had not taken place under a bloody conquest. Among the works in this series, which were carried out between the early 1980s and 2010, were paintings, prints, reliefs and drawings.

Says Eva Farji:

The problem about the American reality has in Larsen's work beginnings in the series called “La América que no fue”, from the early ’80s. Some motives or ideas have their subsequent continuity. The artist starts from imagining what the cultural productions of the peoples of this continent would be like if the conquest had not happened, or if it had been the other way around. According to Dillon, the questions surrounding this starting point

...lead him to make physical images of a different America, hypothetical, without suffering, killing, silence. Alleged pages of codices and civilizations invented with graphisms emerged that refer to metaphorical languages, poetics with representations of possible worlds, geographies, gods and myths” (Dillon, 2019: p. 52).

Pinturas by Gustavo Alfredo Larsen

In his long and outstanding career, Gustavo Larsen was always distinguished by his intense originality, a “volver al origen”, which coincides with the intentionality of this sample. One evokes the life of the original peoples – without the arrival of the colonizers.

That is the starting point of a journey into the unexpected, into the dazzling universe of your imagination.

In this journey the images travel in a river that always accompanies him. Today they converge as virgin tributaries towards an assembly of dreams and longings. It is a deep and mysterious journey towards the atavistic heart of man; one must encounter ancestral signs with the color of toucans and flowers, one must overcome unexpected suns and enjoy the charm of its tribalized figures, dancing interlaced towards infinity, jumping to the undulating rhythm of their bodies, is a primordial scene of the celebration of life in the early times. It is a mirror of the beginning of the tribe in a land of wild splendor.

Here again appear the images that have accompanied him for centuries, endowed with an aesthetic quality that springs from his remarkable artistic sensibility.

It is a deep immersion into the dazzling cliffs of the mind, a star dimension of luminous constellations, a timeless vision of the early days, sailing on a spiritual reef that transports us from the edge of the night to the shores of paradise.

What runic tabloids, these enigmatic gestual calligraphy - turned into expressive pictorial manuscripts - articulate their fragments to configure a planisphere of the palpitating narrative of their dreams.
