Caciques

2010
Procedimiento:Process:VariosMiscellaneous

The 52-week series of 2007 can be considered antecedent of this project. It is composed of 52 acrylic paintings on MDF with cut and carved, each dedicated to a chieftain who acted on our American continent.

Project Csocies I started it in 2010 with the work that is reproduced below, which is a painting made on coarsely sewn fabrics and tensioned in a carved wood frame.

I tried to do a work that visually demonstrated the conflict between the Argentine State in formation and the original peoples. I took the province of Buenos Aires as a stage because I live in it, and I generated a network of names and borders. I selected from various documents, especially from peace treaties signed from 1810 onwards, names of chieftains and captains until I came to gather two hundred. The fabric sectors were added to the frame with seams, alluding to the difficult and delicate task involved in the collective construction of a just country.

With those 200 names of chieftains and captains I realized 25 woodcuts of 10 x 22 cm with eight names each. At the same time, I performed another 34 tacos of the same size, representing groups of people in a dancing attitude. The purpose of these prints was to use them to print on different supports and generate works of different character. Collages, textiles, installations were some of the formats where copies were used. The traditional printing of the same was carried out only between 2015 and 2020, so that a record of the set of xilogophies used repeatedly remains.

The following photos show the set of 59 engravings.

The first `productions with this series of prints were two collages made on two frames, with the addition of prints sewn in the central sectors of them. They have for me a witness value of the launch of the project, as they were exhibited in an individual sample that I called JUNTARSE in 2010.

From then on I carry out, and continue to carry out, a lot of work of different characteristics.

Some are collages on cardboards or wood that are sewn together, sometimes mixed with small volumes, or other images generated for each occasion. I share some examples.

Another group of creations are based on the Andean quipu format. In some cases the prints are tied or sewn over the fabric parts, but I have also printed the fabrics first and then used them in the construction of the textile object.

To use (or abuse) copies of the same prints in different jobs I assign the name dispersed edition, concept that I will develop in another space.

On the other hand, it can be observed that many of the examples shown are also part of the JUNTARSE 30,000 project. I can say that it contains the Caciques project, but it goes far beyond it with works that do not use prints of the 59 tacos here treated.

Gustavo Larsen

Para recordar hay que imaginar

George Didí-Huberman

Gustavo Larsen

To remember you have to imagine

George Didi-Huberman

The genocides and massacres of the indigenous population in America is a central concern in Gustavo Larsen that goes through all his work. As the Bicentenary of the May Revolution was commemorated in 2010, the artist took on the challenge of representing historical massacres, specifically those that occurred in the 19th and 20th centuries in our country. The start was the selection of 200 names of Caciques that he recorded in small prints. With them he composed other works, sewn to images of rounds of human silhouettes taken from his hands, putting into tension the idea of multi-exemplarity of the printmaking and expanding its borders by incorporating textiles.

In the series Juntarse 30.000 -that Larsen develops in the last decade-, takes as a model the quipu, a textile object of Andean pre-Hispanic origin that was used as an accounting system and as a record of stories. The threads twist and tie objects and prints, is a violent gesture based on the process of realization that affects the form. The fragments are tortured, tracing a parallelism or identification between work and body, alluding to the practices of state terrorism of the last civic-military dictatorship. Both relatives of detainees and disappeared persons, as well as the present indigenous peoples, seek or demand bodies that have lost their form, their unity. This reality can only affect the artistic object, which seeks other ways to symbolize, to interact, to experience the aesthetic fact.

When the true testimony of those who did not survive, in the words of Agamben, is the one that will always be lacking, when our country founded its territory from the genocide, name the victims, recognize their name, make it visible and give it a body from art, it turns artistic work into an artifact of memory. Rounds symbolize the need for encounter, introduce hope.

In a pendulum between the documentary and the imaginary, Larsen's work shows us the gaps, invites us to ask ourselves if the indigenous is another or one of us, to question our forgetfulness in order to build memory.
