Gustavo Alfredo Larsen Sticker on the stairs of the La Plata Museum. Posters with the name INAKAYAL and two dates of alleged death, 26-09-1887 and 24-09-1888, printed on papers with screen printing procedure. INACAYAL When months ago I began to define the idea of paying homage to chief Inacayal in the area where his death had occurred, I did not imagine that I would encounter a contradictory, disconcerting story. Generations of researchers have certified that Inacayal died in this Museum on September 24, 1888. His remains, like those of other Indians, became part of the heritage collection treasured by then-Mr. Moreno and were returned to his community in 1994 under National Law No. 23940. Clemente Onelli writes an attractive story where he reveals that the day before the death, the chieftain performs an act of praise for nature. However, a few years ago, researchers detected notes appearing in the newspaper “La Capital” that denounced the death of three indigenous people, including Inacayal, who, according to the source, died on September 26, 1887, one year before what was known until then. As I reviewed several copies of the above-mentioned diary, I could not help but think that the “oficial” version could have been built with the aim of concealing facts that were already controversial at the time. There you can read that following the newspaper's denunciation, the Indians who remained alive in the Museum were transferred to the Casa de Misericordia (today Hospital San Martín) to guarantee their humanitarian care, at the express request of municipal authorities made to the Perito Moreno . De-concealment, the visibility of aberrant facts are still necessary to rewrite distorted stories. From my place of plastic artist it is my intention to contribute to this collective process of memory construction. The white man deserted the land occupied by the Indians by appropriating huge extensions, establishing a computer state. Even today, members of indigenous peoples are persecuted, expelled and ignored by the governments of the day. My artistic position is linked to nomadism, to a roaming that is constantly rewritten, paying attention to the space and the moment in which each production is made or placed. Using the stairs of the Museum as support for a work is to have the opening to create by experimenting and seeing in the process what the impact is, the result that this action generates. The problem axis is a fact produced in this same institutional space in the times of its formation, but the derivation of it has passed the years and will continue to be a source of debate. I would like to express my gratitude to all those who made this installation possible: to the Director of the Museum of La Plata, Dr. Silvia Ametrano; to the head of the Communication Area, Lic. Analía Martino; the staff of that institution; the artist Claudia Aranovich with whom I conducted a seminar on monumental art that motivated this production; those who from different places investigate and write the history and situation of the members of the original peoples, texts that are for me motivational for the realization of works; the colleagues and relatives who always accompany with infinite encouragement and understanding.
