In Larsen's artistic work there is a constant dualism, a fluctuating between antipodes: matter-spirit; earth-sky; variety-unity; a permanent game of signs loaded with mystery, apparently impossible to decode, and a search that goes from the origins of man and the world known to the macrocosm, and perhaps, why not? It is already deepening the inscrutable depths of an underworld, populated with magic and fantasy. Because ultimately if we stop at the analysis of his production, we can affirm that just as Xul Solar created and invented universes and fantastic elements, in Larsen everything arises as a consequence of a "investigación mágico-fantástica", which seems to be extracted from the memory of our ancestors.
In the "Las guardianas de la Luna" series, "Los guardianes del Sol", "Las cuatro esquinas del Cielo", "Las cuatro esquinas de la Tierra", "Ronda alrededor del mundo" or in "Los Anteriores", woodcuts of 1982, manifests the duality from the subject and from the inclusion of images like mandalas, whose symbolism is nothing other than: diversity-concentration, variety-unity; externality-inheritance; differentiation and unification.
The representation of the universe with a large hole in the center and the proximity of the characters in ritual attitude, cause us to immediately relate them to tribal fertility rites; but since ritual movements are related to the rhythm of astral movements and holes, in the spiritual plane they are an opening to another world, it could be interpreted as an aspiration to achieve insertion into that macrocosm, of which we spoke at the beginning. In the case of the "Ronda" the sense is intensified by the position of the "danzarines", who seem to want to modify with their movements and shakes the static and sterile situation of that world "agujereado". The planimetric view of the world, like a large web, is complemented by spiral forms that give an idea of creation and development, wheel and center. The characters showing the entrails, hint at death and the labyrinth - an element used by Larsen in others of his works - form as attractive as the abyss or the whirlwind, in relation to the unconscious and the distance from life, but tempered by the presence of the eyes, symbols of understanding and also of subhumanity.
The need to return to the origins becomes notorious in the concern to make the paper for his works, and in the appearance of hands and teeth, principle of human action and magnetic force, some; and weapons of primordial attack or expression of activity and defense of the inner man the others.
The artist works with the Sun-Earth-Moon cosmogony; the Sun is the active principle, of heroic and masculine character in contrast to the Moon, pale and delicate, passive reflector of sunlight, which governs the tides and physiological cycles of women; female as the Earth and linked to fertility; cosmogony respected and venerated by the farming cultures.
In most of his works there is a symbolic struggle between the central elements, given by the earthly spatiality, by the four natural exteriors - cardinal points, four corners of Larsen-, and the spiritual synthesis, the three is the resultant harmonic of the action of unity on the two; the three represented in the pyramids with their double idea of death and immortality; but also image of the universe springing from the manifested.
"Crónica de los diez años", turns out to be a key work in Larsen's production, because his incursion into painting will have as a consequence the "ablandamiento" of forms and from it will open a new process, in which the complex and figurative signs will leave way for others more simple and abstract, gaining in compositional richness and quality of rhythms, without leaving for it the line that characterizes it.
In "Crónica de los diez años", acrylic on paper, there is a break with the conventions - general tendency in the artist-, by their form of presentation like Codex. The arrangement of the forms, in three friezes -which is repeated in the series of Signs-, one narrower (heaven) and one lower (earth), composed of variable reading signs and the central (earth life) with characters, twelve in total, one for each month of the year.
The year, cyclical process, period of human or cultural life, of cosmic existence involving an ascendant and a descending; evolution and involution; darkness and light; life and death is of utmost importance in his work. Each of the open leaves of the Codex represents a year, in total ten and this number is nothing other than the return to unity after multiplicity; represented since ancient times by the circle that in turn symbolizes heaven, eternity and Perfection. But, like every artist who never conforms to his other Being and is consistent with his being itself, he contrasts the square, representative of the pluralist state of man, which has not yet reached the state of inner unity, namely Perfection.
If we delve even deeper into this circle-square duality -often, on the other hand, in the spiritual morphological universe of our artist-, we find in the first the masculine principle, the energy and the celestial influences; and in the second, the feminine principle and the telluric impulses. It is no coincidence that the representation of time takes circular forms and that the square is the geometric expression of the quaternity: combination and organization of the four fundamental elements; of the four seasons; of the four ages of life; of the four phases of the moon and of the four cardinal points, which finally fixate the world. And to give an image of stability, solidity and permanence: the cube, square of solids, representative of the earth as well as trigrams, which are a constant in Larsen's work.
In this ceaseless dualism in which there is a complement of thesis and antithesis, there is also a tendency to resolve in synthesis, demonstrated by the characters of all his works: man as a symbol of universal existence; the couple showing the union of what is in fact separated and the united figures forming a conjunction; all in an erect attitude, ascending and evolutionary tendency, expression of the human essence; supported on the solidity of the lower guard, in which endless signs alternate; sheltered by a sky on the higher level, united all by essential elements such as the crosses in which the opposites are combined and the primary relationship between two worlds -terrestrial and celestial- is established. All this accentuated through color, the greens take us from the very origin of things to death; going through the despair of the oranges, the fieryness and supernaturality of the reds, without neglecting the sunlight, space, darkness and the underground achieved by the yellows, blues, blacks and lands. All color contributes to creating the climate proper to the magical moments, time passed in the becoming of those fantastic and mysterious creatures, that transfigure behind the mask, playing with that ambivalence between what is and what is to be.
